The Lloyds TSB Relay league match was held recently at the NSC and a large crowd turned out for what proved to be a very exciting night of closely-fought races, writes Phil Salmon.
Four age groups swam - 11 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under and open - with all events at 4 x 25 metres and there were some outstanding swims throughout the night. Individuals that caught my eye were Douglas' Sarah Stannard, Ramseian's Rebecca Vaughan and Southern's Nick Hardacre.
Although the 25 metre swims are a great leveller the swimmers mentioned all deserve a pat on the back from their coaches for some very fine swims.
In the end, Douglas proved too strong for a spirited Ramseian side that included several swimmers who have left the Island squads but whose performances suggest they may be having second thoughts. Hayley Richardson, Lyndsey Skillicorn and Daniel Turner all proved that they are very talented swimmers and, should they choose to take up swimming again, could have a very big impact in years to come.
The Isle of Man Swimming Association also staged two championship events on the same night, the men's and women's 400m individual medley events which attracted a larger than usual entry of 10 men and six women.
The men's event saw Commonwealth Games swimmer Adam Richards dominate from the start but just miss out on an Island Games consideration time. The silver went to Nigel Halsall with James Stamp getting bronze.
It was good to see younger men have a go at one of the most demanding events. David Quine and Andrew Isaac should both be very proud of the fact that at their young age they finished ninth and tenth in a Lloyds TSB Championship open age group event.
The girls' event proved to be equally interesting. Elizabeth Ramsey showed experience that defied her years and defended her trophy in style by smashing the Island Games consideration time.
Kimberley Manley swam an excellent race to take silver, Katie Noden gained bronze while Emily Butler was fourth and Katie Salmon fifth. All five girls were well within the Games consideration times. Well done - excellent work.
