MIKE BAYLEY - DALE’S DOUBLE HAT-TRICK HERO

DIVISION ONE
Foxdale A 9, Britannia International Strathallan A 1
The Foxes leapt above third placed Strathy after this convincing win. Julian Briercliffe may have beaten Darren Smethurst in straight sets, but Smethurst excelled himself, out-hitting Andy Patterson 9/11, 4/11, 11/4, 11/2, 11/7 and then pummelling Paul Corran over five sets. Neither John Magnall nor Adam Teare was troubled by a strangely subdued Strathy side.

Tower A 3, Commitments 7
Hat-trick hero Steve O’Hare helped push Tower back to the second division despite Dave Parsons nosing ahead of both Chris Reynolds and Kevin Doyle. It was also Bingo! for Paul Domingo as he registered his first win of the season, beating Reynolds 11/6, 6/11, 13/11, 5/11, 11/9. That was it for Tower as Simon Radcliffe remained luckless and Reynolds partnered Doyle to mop up the doubles.

Copy Shop A 1, Ramsey A 9
Brian Crellin grabbed a point against league leaders Ramsey, counter-attacking Sam Bailey in an oscillating encounter to win 11/4, 4/11, 11/9, 7/11, 11/7. Crellin also took Mark Johnson to five sets, although Johnson always looked in control, as did Bailey and Scott Johnson in their victories over Dario Mazzotta and Ewan Watterson.

DIVISION TWO
Peel A 3, Travellers A 7
Colin Brown’s hat-trick set Travellers on their way to joint top place, ably assisted by Paul Nelson who lost only to Charlie Bennett who also defeated Mason McLarney. Both McLarney and Nelson pipped Maggie Mulhern at the post, 12/10 and 14/12 respectively. Then McLarney had a titanic tussle with Les Wilson, but went down 9/11, 13/11, 5/11, 11/9, 9/11. Brown and Nelson then steered their way past Mulhern and Wilson to take the doubles in straight sets.

Tower B 5, Foxdale B 5
Mike Bayley’s hat-trick thwarted league leader Tower’s push for promotion. He was assisted by Becky Bayley and Rob Wright who both overcame substitute, Dave Callow, in five close sets. Tower B regulars, Dave Parsons and Steve Ellis-Pearson, won the remaining matches and combined to take the doubles for a disappointing draw.

Copy Shop B 5, Onchan 5
Malc Lewis’ unavailability gifted Copy Shop three valuable points in their quest to avoid the drop. Mal Looker added one more by beating Ben Scott who went on to overcome his aversion to fifth sets by defeating Adam Davies 12/10, 12/10, 9/11, 5/11, 11/9. Davies responded with an 11/7, 11/4, 4/11, 13/11 win over Scott Lewis who had earlier beaten Looker. Both the Scotts beat Ronan McDonnell, and then won the doubles to secure a hard fought draw.

DIVISION THREE
Ramsey B 3, Copy Shop C 7
Copy Shop recorded their first win of the season thanks to a hat-trick from Malcolm Lambert and two points each from Adrian Tinkler and young Barney Kimberley who both lost to Chas Grills. Frances Radcliffe was the only player to take a set off Lambert, whilst Marion Forrest pushed Kimberley to five sets, only to lose 4/11, 11/5, 11/7, 10/12, 4/11. Grills and Forrest dominated the doubles to gain Ramsey’s final point.

Britannia International Strathallan ‘B’ 8, Peel B 2
Fast improving Julyan Davey bagged a brace for Peel top-spinning it past Stu Douglas and Chris Kewley. Alex Myers and Danny Hamill both took Douglas to four sets, with Hamill coming closest before losing 12/10, 2/11, 5/11, 9/11. None got near to unbeaten Andy Horne who then joined Kewley to command the doubles.

Travellers B 0, Foxdale C 10
Mike Campbell, Alan Harding and Jackie Gill, of third placed Travellers, had no answer to the all out attacking style of Ken Mitchell or Mike and William Bayley. Although Campbell and Harding took Mike to a fourth set he finished the night unbeaten having also scored a hat-trick for the Dales in Division Two.

DIVISION FOUR
Douglas Select A 2, Arbory A 8
Select’s Sean Drewry won a ding-dong battle with substitute Matty Lamb 10/12, 16/14, 13/11, 11/9 and this may have helped J P Calma to do likewise, but then Lamb chopped and blocked his way to a narrow victory over George Brockhouse 13/11, 14/12, 12/10. Andy and Hadyn McLarney scored trebles and finished off the doubles to ensure promotion for Arbory A with two matches to go.

Arbory B 5, Arbory C 5
Julian Brindle blasted his way to a hat-trick and his son, Harry, nearly did likewise, beaten only by the cool and confident David Lovelady, who also accounted for Brian Tung 11/4, 9/11, 11/9, 11/9. Alex Maitland and the industrious Matty Lamb only took four sets to see off Tung for a point apiece; and the C team grabbed a draw when Lovelady and Maitland overcame Tung and Brindle Jnr in the doubles.

Tower C 6, Peel C 4
Dave Callow recorded his eighth consecutive hat-trick for Tower and Leanne Corlett put the early defeat by Chris Holmes behind her to beat both Danny Hamill and Sean Cassidy. Although Helen Walton took Cassidy to five sets, all the Peelers took advantage of her lack of recent league play, so it was left to Callow and Corlett to take the doubles 11/9, 11/6, 11/4 to secure the win.
